"A" words for the day....A is for Awareness. A is for Accountability. A is for Action...

Why are these words relevant to a universal design movement?  Because if we are talking nationally about building a culture of health,  then"building" is where we need to start--using these words as talking points.

Lookimg again at Merriam-Webster:

A is for AWARENESS: the quality or state of being aware : knowledge and understanding that something is happening or exists

is for ACCOUNTABILITY: the quality or state of being accountable; especially : an obligation or willingness to accept responsibility

is for ACTION: a thing done : deed
b : the accomplishment of a thing usually over a period of time, in stages, or with the possibility of repetition

Think about it this way: When people in building and real estate development industries nationwide become AWARE of the national health problems and negative socio-economic impact brought on by exclusive designing and building practices, recognize their ACCOUNTABILITY for the poor health and chronic conditions brought on by the barriers created by the outdated practices that contribute to the lagging statistics, and then take ACTION to make the changes that will raise the standards for the rest of US, the chances of health equanimity increase dramatically.

Click the info-graphic below for some great information from the CDC that might make it easier to understand.  The image shows the 5 social determinants of health (SDOH).   Neighborhood and Built Environment are at the top.  The evidence for ACTION is everywhere. Please look around you.
